The Governing Body at Deanshanger Primary School

All state primary schools are accountable to their governing bodies, which in turn are accountable to parents and the community. Governing bodies exist to maintain high educational standards, to set the strategic direction of schools, to ensure that they adhere to their statutory duties and act as a ‘critical friend of the school', advising and supporting the leadership team. Other key roles include –

•  Prioritising the highest safeguarding practice and that the school is a safe and happy learning environment.

•  Ensuring that the school fulfils all its statutory obligations and that all information regarding this is easily accessible on the school website.

•  Determining the strategic direction of the school through the School Improvement Plan (SIP) and ensuring that this is based on an annual and accurate Self Evaluation (SEF).

•  Monitoring and evaluating the progress of children against the annual targets outlined in the SIP.

•  Monitoring and evaluating the progress of senior leadership to ensure progress in all areas and the smooth running of the school.

•  Being visible in the school through governor visits and support subject improvement in line with the SIP.

•  Approving and monitoring the budget.

•  Supporting the recruitment of excellent staff.

The Governing Body is made up of members of the local authority, community, parents and staff. We reconstituted in April 2015 to ensure that our makeup and roles were in line with statutory guidelines. Post Ofsted, November 2017, we followed advice and had a full review of governance (February/March 2017) to ensure that as a governing body, we rapidly ensured the school moved forward and is held account to its SIP. The governors are committed to School and self-improvement and ensure that training is regular and well matched to needs and roles and responsibilities.

The term of office for all governors, except the Head teacher, is 4 years.

The full Governing Body meets at least 3 times a year with half termly committee meetings for Finance and Premises, Personnel and Curriculum.

David Aaronson:  I have been a Governor for nearly 25 years and my motives for this were to support the work the school does in providing a positive experience for all children regardless of ability and to ensure that it became a transforming force in the wider community. I worked in the field of Special Education with Adults with Learning Disabilities and this helped me in my role as a SEND link governor. I was, until this May, both a District and Parish Councillor so was able to work with both the school and wider community to increase positive engagement and helping the school access support and funding from outside agencies.

Sarah Webb:  I have been an associate governor for a number of years. I feel I am able to bring a range of skills, knowledge and expertise to DPS as a governor. I have a wealth of experience and knowledge to bring linked to all aspects of assessment – formative and summative. I have taught in all year groups across the school so feel I have a good working knowledge of all phases of the school. I have been involved with the governing body for a number of years and have a lot of experience and knowledge about how the school operates. I feel well informed to make decisions about the school. I feel passionately about Deanshanger Primary School and ultimately I want the school to be the best it can be. This is my motivation for being a school governor.

Co-opted Governors

Philippa Doyle :  I have lived locally for 22 years since moving from Scotland. When we moved, our daughter Rebecca was 4 years old and more than ready to start school. We looked at various schools in Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire and the school that impressed us most was in Deanshanger. I still feel that way, and am immensely proud of my school and of its ethos. I have worked here as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant for many years specialising in working with vulnerable children and guiding year 6 children during their transition to secondary school. Previously I worked in Training and Personnel Management in the retail sector. I became a Governor in 2003 to represent non-teaching staff and communicate their concerns and suggestions to the Governing Board. I strongly believe that every child matters and if I can help just one educationally, socially or emotionally either in the classroom or as a Governor then I have achieved an important part of my job.

Stephanie Hibberd:  During my professional life as a Methodist Minister I have been incredibly privileged to serve as a governor in two very different schools in contrasting areas for over 20 years. It has always been a real joy to be part of a governing body, lead assemblies and be a part of sharing in classroom settings. Since moving to Deanshanger I'm delighted to have the opportunity to extend that privilege and honour serving as a Community Governor here at DPS at an exciting stage of its journey. For the past academic year I was part of the Admin committee but having recently taken on the role of Chair of Governors I endeavour to attend the various sub committees so as to have a fair understanding of what is happening across the life of the school. I am also a link governor for R.E. as in the previous schools I served.

Michelle Fernandez :  I am a Senior Finance Manager for Mercedes Benz Financial Services and have worked in finance for over 20 years, with many large blue chip companies. I bring extensive all round financial skills to the governing body, including budgetary, financial accounting, control, procurement and analysis. Along with this I also have many years of management experience, to include coaching, training and performance management. Having started my accounting career in the public sector I understand how budgets are managed, reported and recorded.

Jonathan Heap:  A proud father of two girls at Deanshanger Primary School. I have been a governor for 4 years now, part of that time as Chair of the Governing Body. I work in Milton Keynes for Sainsburys Argos, and live locally to the school. Passionate about total school performance and stretching the thinking to achieve our goals of being an Outstanding school! Personally, I'm from Yorkshire originally, having located in this area after a few years living overseas. I enjoy supporting (and challenging) the school team to achieve more for our children, through working together with the Governing Body.

Parent Governors

Julie Fletcher:  I have lived in Deanshanger since 2007 and am married with two daughters. I have been a Parent Governor since March 2014 and I am on the Resources committee as well as having a focus on governor training. I am also the link governor for the English curriculum, which is an area I am particularly passionate about. I grew up with a love of reading and story writing so I am keen to actively support the school in developing these skills in all of our children. My work experience covers business research and human resources in the financial services industry and I have been able to bring these skills into my governor role by assisting in senior level recruitment and induction, as well as giving input on the structure of the governing body during our reconstitution process.

Elected Staff

Trevor Gregory:  I became part of Deanshanger Primary School again in September 2015. I became a governor again to help support and develop the ideas and vision of the new head teacher, Mrs Rice. She was key in my decision to return to teach at the school and I feel passionately about the direction and ethos she is creating. The school excites me to push myself for every single child to achieve the best that they can and being part of the governors allows me to assist in other ways, instead of just from the classroom. I'm also representing the teaching staff as a whole, acting as the point of communication between teaching staff and governors should the need arise.

Victoria Archer I am a parent of two children who attend Deanshanger Primary School and have lived in the village since 2004 - I believe, by default, this means I have a vested interest in our community and more importantly, the school. I became a Parent Governor in February 2016 and my role within the Full Governing Board is Lead Governor for British Values. I am also Artist-In-Residence at DPS, teaching children Art lessons for three afternoons a week. I have always been creatively inspired I don't see it as a choice, it's part of who I am and I am keen to share this passion with the children of the school in any way I can. During 2015, I was lucky enough to have been asked to paint a mural on the walls of the library, which was an amazing experience on a personal level, but most importantly, I hope it provides the children with an enriched place to inspire their imaginations. Like Trevor Gregory, I was inspired to become a Parent Governor due to the dedication and energy Rachel Rice brings to the school. From the moment she began her chapter at DPS, Rachel breathed new life into the school. It is now teeming with colour and vibrancy, not just on the walls, but on the children's' faces and through the attitudes of the staff, proving that Rachel's' positivity is contagious. My work history covers IT consulting, European online and offline marketing, customer facing-retail, bookkeeping for a small business and most recently, working in the fashion industry from a PR-perspective. I hope my varied work background provides me with a well-rounded set of opinions and values which may add an alternative and diverse perspective to assist the dynamic and proactive approaches of the Board of Governors.

LA Governor

Sue Forman:  I have lived locally for over 20 years and have 2 ‘grown up' sons. I strongly believe in every child having opportunities to achieve to the best of their ability and I enjoy being part of a team that aims to be inclusive, challenging and part of the community. In addition to all of these important elements our School aims is to equip every child with skills for life in a rich learning environment which I believe is essential for their future. Education is constantly changing, providing challenges and I thrive on supporting our School to adapt and achieve our goals.
In addition to bringing a common sense approach and ‘can do' attitude to this role, I bring a broad range of knowledge, skills and experience to the Governor Role gained through working for over 25 years in the education world: teaching (mainly FE but some Middle School experience), managing/mentoring teams as a Sales Manager, Project manager - CRM system, Event Manager (Primary & Secondary educational publishing). However, in addition to the above I have worked voluntarily at various times for Charity groups and organisations supporting children's education (setting up Pre-school, Toy Library, Playgroup, Summer Activity weeks, Beavers, etc.).

Head Teacher

Rachel Rice:  As Head teacher I feel privileged to work in such a vibrant and community focused school. We are well supported by the local community, have a very active PTA, parents that show a huge interest their child's education and very importantly, happy and polite children that come to school eager to learn – the recipe for learning success. I am also very fortunate to work alongside a committed team of governors that constantly challenging us as a critical friends whilst supporting our forward direction. We work strategically to ensure that our School Improvement Plan is acted upon in a timely manner and that all other advice is reflected upon to ensure our school is constantly moving towards being outstanding in the widest sense. Our latest Ofsted visit, November 2016, has sharpened our focus and intensified our commitment to providing the very best for every child.
