Are you interested in being a school governor at Deanshanger Primary School? Would you like to be part of a strong and committed team of governors that support the School in this next exciting phase of joining the Grand Union Partnership?
Mrs. Hannah Bailey was a dedicated and highly committed member of the governing board until she started her teaching role at the school in January 2022. Whilst delighted that she is now a member of the teaching team, we have a vacancy for a parent governor as a result. We would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her valued input to school improvement in her governance role and the same highly valued input now as a Y5 class teacher.
Although this is a voluntary role, there are lots of reasons that might make you want to consider joining us!
What does the role of a school governor involve?
You’ll get to see things from the school's perspective and see how the school is managed and led. You'll gain an in-depth understanding of how decisions are made at Deanshanger while playing an integral part in deciding our next steps. As a parent governor, you would not speak 'on behalf' of the parent body but rather share your own thoughts as a parent. The role and responsibilities of parent governors are no different from those of the other governors. You don’t need previous experience as support and training will be given. Whilst the meetings are largely in the evening, there will be times when you will be invited into the school during the day. School governors are the largest volunteer force in education, with around 250,000 governors in the UK!
Although this could possibly be a very different role from your current or previous experience, it will enable you to develop varied skills both personally and professionally e.g., strategic planning, human resources and performance management, project management, marketing, decision-making, and lots of communication and teamwork.
We have three committees at the school – Finance and Premises, Curriculum and Personnel. Each committee meets three times a year and, in between the meetings, there is often reading materials shared for comment and school visits. You wouldn’t be expected to sit on all three committees. Additionally, you would be part of full governor’s meetings and there are three of these a year unless extraordinary meetings are required.
We encourage applications from all members of society, regardless of background, gender, ethnicity, disability or age (as long as you're over 18).
If this is something that you would like to know about, please contact Mr David Aaronson, Chair of Governors in the first instance.
